Polarized Lenses: What do they do?

Everyone has heard of polarized lenses. Many sports frames come with polarized lenses, and even some designer sunglasses are made this way; but what exactly does it do?

To put it simply, polarized lenses are used to reduce glare and provide truer colours through your sunglasses. This is done via a crystallized coating that acts as a light filter, letting vertical light in and keeping horizontal light out. Polarized light is the result of light waves bouncing off an object in a concentrated direction; these are what cause those horrible glare-blind spots when you’re out driving, playing sports, on the boat, etc. Polarized sunglasses are a must-have for anyone with light-sensitive eyes.

Polarized sunglasses may sometimes affect LCD screens when viewed from certain angles, for example a GPS screen in your car or sometimes your cellphone. Remember to take these things into consideration before purchasing a polarized lens!
